Visions of Light 2012
The mission of the 2012 Visions of Light (VOL) exhibition is to challenge photographers to go beyond producing a technically correct photographic image and demonstrate their use and/or control of light to help define the subject. The light can be natural, manmade, or a combination that enhances the impact, drama, emotion, composition, and/or message of the image.
The VOL is a juried photographic exhibition sponsored and hosted by the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts (TLCA) in Palmer Lake, Colorado.
The show will be judged by:
- Mark Kirkland, Kirkland Photography & Design, Palmer Lake, Colorado.
- Terry Moore M.Photog, Cr., CPP of the Family studio, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
ACCEPTANCE AND JUDGING CRITERIA:
The jury and the judges will use the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) guidelines for the 12 Elements of a Merit Print to make their image selections. All the elements of a “Merit Print” will be considered, but the selection process will place special emphasis on the element of light. An explanation of the PPA “12 Elements of a Merit Print” can be found at the following link: (coming soon) The 12 Elements are used in this competition as an evaluating guide with the permission of the PPA.
Judging will weigh heavily on the image and how it fits the category and how it meets the goals of the show. The presentation of the finished print reflects on the professionalism of the artist and will also be a consideration of the judging.
EXHBITION CATEGORIES:
The exhibition will have 5 categories with a $100.00 first prize award for each category and a $500.00 best of show award. Each category will also have 2 honorable mentions.
The categories are:
Landscape: Natural and urban world.
Architecture: Things manufactured, constructed, or handmade.
People: Includes portraits as well as people engaged in activities.
Wildlife and Nature: Naturally occurring flora and fauna.
Abstract: Focus on form, line, color, design etc are more important than the nature of the subject.
It is left up to the entrant to choose the category for each of his or her images. The jury/judge will not move an entry into a different category.
The jury will select the best entries without regard to category. As a result there is no certainty that each category will have an image juried into the show. If that occurs the category’s prize money will be distributed amongst the other categories.
SUBMITTAL GUIDELINES:
- All images must be submitted in digital format for consideration for this exhibition.
- The jury and acceptance process will be based on the digital images submitted.
- Digital images may be submitted electronically via the TLCA website or burned to a Disc and mailed to the TLCA at the following address:

- Images must be sized at 300 ppi, 1600 pixels on the long side, and saved in flattened JPG format.
- Images must be submitted as 8-bit files.
- Images will be viewed in sRGB color space.
- Digital frames, titles, or artist names may not be embedded in the images.
- Files should be named with Title Title Title.jpg, separated by spaces. e.g. Desert Golden Sunrise.jpg
– Last day to receive electronic images or Disc is midnight, MST, Jan 29, 2012.
- Eligibility: The exhibition is open to all photographers both amateur and professional.

ENTRANC FEES:
- Fees: – $35.00 for 3 images if received by midnight MST, January 1, 2012
- $40.00 for 3 images if received after midnight MST January 1, 2012.
- $10.00 for each additional entry.
- Entry fees are non-refundable.
- No application will be considered complete until the entry fee has been received.
- If images are submitted via the TLCA website, fees must be paid via the same web site.
- If images are submitted via a mailed or hand delivered Disc then the fees and application must accompany the Disc.
- There is no limit to the number of images that may be submitted.
ACCEPTED ARTWORK:
- Entrants will receive notification of accepted / not accepted work via email by Feb. 11, 2012.
- Accepted artwork must be received by Feb. 25, 2012.
- Shipped artwork must be received at the TLCA between Feb. 21, and Feb 25, 2012.
- Hand delivered artwork will be accepted at the TLCA between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm on Feb 25, 2011. If special accommodations are needed, directly contact the TLCA.
- Shipped artwork must be shipped in a reusable packing container with a pre-paid return addressed label.
- Shipped artwork must not contain peanut packing material.
- All accepted images must be printed and framed or mounted in a professional manner. No clips mounts are allowed.
- All accepted artwork must be ready to hang with wire on back; no saw tooth hangers, clip mounts or missing wires.
- The exterior dimensions of the finished work cannot exceed 1200 sq. inches.
- Judging will be performed on submitted artwork.
- After the show all artwork must be picked up between noon and 3:00 pm on March 25, 2012.
- Shipped artwork will be returned the week of March 25, 2011.
- All artwork must remain on display for the duration of the show.
- Received artwork not meeting the above criteria will not be hung or judged.
INSURANCE/LIABILITY:
Submitted artwork will be protected and insured for up to $500.00 while in the care and custody of the TLCA, but not during transit to or from the show. TLCA is not responsible for artwork left after the pick up time. Artists are encouraged to consider their own insurance needs to protect their interests.
SALES/COMMISSIONS:
- Artwork that is not for sale will be accepted.
- The price established by the artist must include a 30% commission to the TLCA. If the artwork sells, the artist will receive 70% of the sales price. For artwork sold during the exhibition, the TLCA will send a check to the artist no later than April 27.
- Artists accepted into the show are encouraged to bring bin art. Artists must provide the bin container and two inventory copies of their bin art. All bin art must be delivered and picked up at the same schedule as the accepted artwork and must remain at the art center for the duration of the show. All bin art is subject to same 30% commission.
USE RIGHTS:
By submitting images to this show, the applicant grants artwork reproduction rights for current and future publicity purposes to the TLCA without compensation. Permission to include artwork in the exhibition catalog may be granted or withheld on the application form.
RESTRICTIONS:
- Images selected for TLCA exhibitions in the past are NOT eligible.
- Images previously submitted for the VOL or other TLCA exhibitions but not selected for the exhibition may be resubmitted for the VOL.
- The VOL encourages the entry of current work to keep the exhibit fresh. However there is no limitation on when a photograph was taken or when it was produced for the show.
